No discipline is ever likely to have as entrancing an introduction as Charles King provides here for the new science of cultural anthropology early in the twentieth century. At its centre stands Professor Franz Boas of Columbia University, the mentor of a band of intrepid female students like Margaret Mead and Zora Neale Hurston. Their field work overturned eugenicist thinking on race and gender, dismissing these as biological fictions. The sheer exuberance of his students’ lives blew away stereotypes, ushering in a freer, more fluid, modern understanding of sexuality and gender.  (Available in all formats; 448 pages)
