As the title suggests, this book looks at what constitutes our lives– our work, laboring, and free activities – and the values we have attached to these over the centuries. The story in the Western world begins in ancient Athens where the polis defined the boundaries of the private and public realms, and the conditions under which humanity live. Greek philosophers lay the foundations of the story and set off a long tradition of thinking on these fundamental questions into modern times. Writing in 1958, a year after sputnik, Arendt, a philosopher refugee from Nazi Germany, boldly makes her case for the human condition in our time. (Available in all formats; 348 pages)
