Speaker: Lawrence Wiliford
Title:  “Charting a New Path: Classical Vocal Music and Canadian Visual Media Distribution”
Introducer: Linda Hutcheon

Abstract: During the COVID-19 pandemic, opera companies and other performing arts organizations embraced film and video production to enable artists to continue their craft while also engaging with audiences at a time when most concert halls and other live music performing venues in North America were closed. This intense three-year period revealed exciting artistic potential but also a number of obstacles within the Canadian media ecosystem. This presentation will explore how changes in domestic media consumption and rapid technological advancements in filmmaking and digital distribution have inspired a new generation of artists and producers of opera and classical music storytelling. It will consider the past and current context of the television and visual media broadcasting system in Canada and its implications for the performing arts. It will also open up questions about how public policy in Canada might ensure that artists and performing arts organizations can emerge from the current period of social and technological disruption in ways that embrace digital visual media as a broader strategy of innovation, engagement and accessibility.
