Title: “The Real World of Science Communication”
Abstract: Theoretical models of science communication certainly have their place, but what are the “real world” influences at play in the making of, for example, a science, nature, or environmental documentary? What about a podcast or radio broadcast? How are complex situations distilled into narratives for a visual medium like film, short articles for your cellphone, or “reels” for social media? What is lost or gained in the quest to both tell the truth and tell a good story?
Bio: Roberto Verdecchia is an award-winning documentary TV director, writer, and producer. Over more than 25 years, he has pursued a wide range of subjects, from indigenous rights in the Amazon, the insect life in your home, and high-speed particle physics, to the mystery of what killed Edgar Allan Poe. His work has been recognized by the Canadian Screen Awards, International Wildlife Festival, and Banff World Media Festival, among others. He also teaches ‘Communicating Science: Film, Media and Society’ at University of Toronto Scarborough.
