Title: “Advocating for Science”

Bio: Mark Lautens completed his undergraduate degree in Chemistry at the University of Guelph then conducted doctoral studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison followed by postdoctoral work at Harvard University. His work is in the area of metal-based catalysis for the synthesis of medicinally interesting molecules.

He joined the University of Toronto in 1987 and has held the AstraZeneca Endowed Chair since 1998. He is currently the J.B. Jones Distinguished Professor and is University Professor. He held an NSERC Industrial Research Chair with Merck from 2003-2013. He has mentored 200 graduate students and postdoctoral fellows.

Lautens was made a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 2001 and awarded Officer of the Order of Canada in 2015.

Abstract: In 2017 Lautens began contributing Opinion pieces to the Globe & Mail, Toronto Star and Hill Times. His topics include research support for STEM, citizenship, and pandemic-related topics including virtual teaching and testing. These topics and the motivation behind his becoming involved in public advocacy under the hashtag #educateadvocate will be the subject of the discussion.

The speaker will be participating at the Faculty Club. This will be a hybrid event. You may choose to eat lunch at the Faculty Club with other Fellows, then watch the Zoom link from there, or to register for Zoom only. The deadline to register is 3 PM on the preceding Monday.

Everyone who enters the Faculty Club must provide proof of full vaccination and identification to verify. Once in the building, please wear a mask until seated but you may remove it when eating or drinking.
