Topic: Is the biology of reproduction an insurmountable barrier to sexual equality

Chair and Organizer: Maggie Redekop

In 1970, Shulamith Firestone lamented “the tyranny of reproduction” and offered a utopian vision of a time when technology would liberate women from biology. In the years since then there have been ongoing debates about how the biology of reproduction relates to gender inequities. These have been given urgency recently, not only because of developments in reproductive technology but also because of increased acceptance of same sex parenting. Participants in this colloquium are invited to suggest additional readings and should also feel free to share personal experiences that help to bring the questions into focus.
