Niccolo Machiavelli, The Prince (1532)

Discussion Leader: David Milne

The most famous book on (the dark art of) politics ever written, The Prince remains as lively and shocking today as when it first appeared almost five hundred years ago. Initially denounced as a collection of sinister maxims and a recommendation for tyranny, it has more recently been defended as the first scientific treatment of politics as it is practiced rather than as it ought to be practiced.  So universal, the author’s name has become an adjective. Hotly debated in politics and ethics, it raises many issues: is there a case for realism? for power politics? for an ethics uniquely appropriate to the political condition?
