Book Club July 4, 2022, at 2-4pm – Fellows & External Fellows Only

Steven Price,

Lampedusa

(326 pp, available in e-book and audio-book format).

Discussion leader: David Milne

Brief background discussion leaders: Giuliana Katz (on Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa’s posthumously published 1958 novel, Il gattopardo [The Leopard]) & Linda Hutcheon (on Luchino Visconti’s 1963 film adaptation: available on YouTube for $4.99 rental at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1zxENg81gxw )

NOTE: If you have already seen the film of The Leopard with Burt Lancaster in the lead, you will know much about the novel of that name on which it was based. There is absolutely no need to see the film or read the novel that just happens to be the one Price’s historical protagonist writes in Lampedusa, but if you are intrigued, please dip in!

Capturing vividly the nostalgic tone of the Italian novel (Il gattopardo) (and, interestingly of the English translation by Archibald Colquhoun–The Leopard) about the dying days of the Sicilian aristocracy in the 1860s as the new state of “Italy” is being formed, Price’s novel, Lampedusa, tells the story of the writing of that very novel by Giuseppe Tomasi, the last prince of Lampedusa, Sicily, in the late 1950s. Historically and biographically accurate, this is an elegant fictional exploration of the aging writer’s attempt to create the lasting literary legacy of his class, his island, his family and himself.
