Suzanne Simard, Finding the Mother Tree: Discovering the Wisdom of the Forest (2021)

Discussion Leader: Daphne Maurer

Several recent books describe how trees in the forest communicate with each other through underground networks of fungal filaments. This one is from a Canadian who was one of the first to provide the evidence for what was initially regarded as incredible. That she was a young woman, a mere grad student, in the male-dominated field of Forestry didn’t help to get her work accepted. Now a professor at UBC, she describes how her discoveries developed, from her days growing up in BC forests, to the meticulous field experiments required to prove how trees of different ages and even species influence each other’s growth and survival, her adventures along the way, and what her discoveries imply for forestry practices such as replanting after clear-cutting.
