Speaker Information for February 16, 2022 [note change of speaker*]

Speaker: Jeffrey Dvorkin, Former Director, Journalism Program, UTSC.

Title: “Trusting the News in a Digital Age”

Abstract: Jeffrey will introduce his new book, Trusting the News in a Digital Age, which provides an ethical framework and the much-needed tools for assessing information produced in our digital age. With the tsunami of information on social media and other venues, many have come to distrust all forms of communication, including the news. His practical text offers guidance on how to use critical thinking, appropriate skepticism, and journalistic curiosity to handle this flow of undifferentiated information.

Bio: Jeffrey Dvorkin is a Senior Fellow at Massey College at the University of Toronto.

He was director of the journalism program at University of Toronto Scarborough Campus from 2010 until July, 2020. Prior to teaching, he was in charge of two international news organizations, CBC Radio in Toronto and NPR News in Washington, DC. From 2000-2006 he was NPR’s first independent news ombudsman and the only broadcast ombuds in the United States. Dvorkin has lectured and taught journalism abroad as well, in Turkey, Niger, Guinea, Chile, Portugal, Germany, and Poland. He is an advisor on ethical issues to the School of Medicine and is a frequent media commentator on journalism and ethical issues. His recent book, Trusting the News in a Digital Age, is a guide for students and citizens alike, and is published in the UK and the US by Wiley.
