Talk: “Stories from Bella Bella: On Being a Guest and Researcher in Heiltsuk Territory”

Abstract: This talk reflects on the research ethics and protocols associated with being a guest and researcher in Heiltsuk First Nation territory. It focuses on a community-based project documenting community resilience in managing environmental crises, using the Nathan E. Stewart oil spill as a case study. Its objective is to consider how community-responsible research reconfigures university-community relations in ways that advance our understanding of Indigenous resurgence and reconciliation.
Bio: Cheryl Suzack (Batchewana First Nation) is an associate professor cross-appointed to Indigenous Studies, English, and Law. Her research focuses on Indigenous studies, Indigenous law and humanities, Indigenous literatures, and Indigenous feminism. She is the author of Indigenous Women’s Writing and the Cultural Study of Law and a co-editor of Indigenous Women and Feminism: Politics, Activism, Culture.
